BNP (Brain Natriuretic Peptide, also known as B-type Natriuretic Peptide) is a 32-amino acid peptide hormone secreted primarily by the heart ventricles in response to stretching caused by increased blood volume or pressure. Despite its name (reflecting its initial discovery in brain tissue), BNP is predominantly a cardiac hormone. It promotes natriuresis (sodium excretion), diuresis (water excretion), and vasodilation, working to reduce blood volume and cardiac workload. BNP and its N-terminal fragment (NT-proBNP) are widely used as biomarkers for heart failure diagnosis and prognosis. Synthetic BNP (Nesiritide) is approved for acute decompensated heart failure treatment.
