Melanotan II is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) that produces multiple effects through melanocortin receptor activation. Originally developed at the University of Arizona, Melanotan II stimulates melanogenesis (tanning), suppresses appetite, and induces penile erection/sexual arousal. The cyclic structure provides greater potency and metabolic stability than linear analogs. Melanotan II is less selective than Melanotan I, activating MC1R (tanning), MC3R (energy homeostasis), and MC4R (sexual function, appetite). It remains a research compound and is not approved for clinical use.
