Selank is a synthetic heptapeptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is derived from the immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin with an added Pro-Gly-Pro sequence that extends its half-life and enhances CNS activity. Selank exhibits a unique combination of anxiolytic and nootropic properties without causing sedation or dependence. The peptide modulates GABA-A receptor expression, influences serotonergic and dopaminergic neurotransmission, and affects the expression of genes involved in neuroplasticity and immune function. Selank has been approved in Russia for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder and is widely used as a cognitive enhancer.
